. Preface This is the thirteenth edition of CAN/CSA-B149.1, Natural gas and propane installation code. It supersedes the previous editions, published in 2000 by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), in 1995, 1991, 1986, 1980, 1978, 1976, and 1974 by the Canadian Gas Association (CGA), and in 1971, 1966, 1962, and 1958 by the Canadian Standards Association. 1 Scope 1.1 This Code applies to the installation of (a) appliances, equipment, components, and accessories where gas is to be used for fuel purposes; (b) piping and tubing systems extending from the termination of the utility installation for natural gas or from the distributor.s propane tank; and (c) vehicle-refuelling appliances and associated equipment meeting the requirements of a general-purpose appliance to fill a natural-gas-fuelled vehicle. 1.2 This Code does not apply to (a) marine or pipeline terminals; (b) petroleum refineries; (c) gas where used as a feedstock in chemical plants; (d) utility pipeline distribution and transmission pipelines; (e) storage and handling of liquefied natural gas or underground reservoirs for natural gas; (f) the installation of NGV fuel systems, containers, and refuelling stations; (g) the storage and utilization of compressed natural gas on boats; (h) the installation of vehicle-refuelling appliances when NGV storage containers are installed as part of the system; (i) refrigerated storage or underground reservoirs for propane; (j) propane used on boats; (k) propane used as a propellent in aerosol containers; (l) butane fuel cylinders of 150 g capacity or less; and (m) the installation of containers and equipment to be used for propane in distribution locations and filling plants and on tank trucks, tank trailers, and cargo liners. 1.3 Where the term "gas" is used, the requirements of this Code include, and apply equally to, any of the following gases or mixtures of them: natural gas, manufactured gas, or mixtures of propane gas and air, propane, propylene, butanes (normal butane or isobutane), and butylenes. 1.4 This Code and any Standards referenced in it do not make or imply any assurance or guarantee with respect to the life expectancy, durability, or operating performance of equipment and materials referenced in the Code. 1.5 The values given in yard/pound units are the standard. This Code contains SI (metric) equivalents to yard/pound units so that the Code can be used in SI (metric) units. SI (metric) equivalents may be approximate. 1.6 In this Code, unless approved otherwise by the authority having jurisdiction, "shall" indicates a mandatory requirement; "should" indicates a recommendation or that which is advised but not mandatory; "may" indicates an advisory or optional statement. Notes to the text do not include mandatory or alternative requirements. The purpose of a note is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material that is not properly a part of this Code. Notes to figures and tables, however, are considered part of the figure or table and are written as mandatory requirements. Legends to figures are also written as mandatory requirements. B149HB-05 This is the fourth edition of CSA's B149HB, Natural Gas and Propane Code Handbook. It supersedes the previous editions, published in 2000 by CSA and in 1995 and 1991 by the Canadian Gas Association.
1. SCOPE The scope of this handbook is limited to Clauses 1 through 8, inclusive, of the CSA-B149.1-05 Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code, and selected parts of the CSA-B149.2-05 Propane Storage and Handling Code. The handbook follows the sequence of the B149.1-05 Code from clauses 1. Scope to 8. Venting Systems and Air Supply for Appliances, inclusive. Corresponding requirements from the B149.2-05 Code have been included in this edition so that handbook users are provided with relevant information on requirements governing most typical natural gas and propane installations. Due to the differences in the physical nature of natural gas and propane, separate requirements are denoted in the Code. These differences between requirements should not be confused in practice. B139ON-06 1 Scope 1.1 This Code applies to the installation of (a) appliances, equipment, components, and accessories where oil is used for fuel purposes, such as (i) forced-air furnaces; (ii) boilers; (iii) process furnaces; (iv) water heaters; (v) vehicle heaters; and (vi) power supplies for buildings; (b) all stationary and portable oil-burning equipment, including fuel supply equipment and piping; and (c) aboveground and underground tanks. 1.2 This Code provides minimum requirements for the installation of, or alterations to, oil-burning equipment, including (a) supply tanks as described in Clause 1.1(c); (b) piping; (c) pumps; (d) control devices; (e) venting systems; and (f) central oil distribution. 1.3 This Code provides minimum requirements for the installation of, or alterations to (a) accessories; and (b) heating distribution systems insofar as these affect the proper operation of the oil-burning equipment. 1.4 This Code does not apply to (a) tanks and supply piping installed in refineries; (b) appliances installed in mobile housing, recreational vehicles, and marine craft; (c) lamps; and (d) such portable devices as blowtorches, melting pots, and weed burners.
Note: For installation of oil-burning equipment in mobile housing and recreational vehicles, refer to CAN/CSA-Z240 MH Series. 1.5 This Code provides requirements for the maintenance of the most commonly used types of oil-burning equipment as detailed in Clause 13. 1.6 Annex B provides the recommended precautions for filling tanks. 1.7 The values given in SI (metric) units are the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. 1.8 In CSA Special Publications, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard; and "can" is used to express possibility or capability.
Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application. Product Name B149-05 ONTARIO FUEL INSTALLER'S PACKAGE Year 2005 ippcsa Product ID 2020127
