In this fun-filled look at fractions, Brian P. Cleary and Brian Gable demonstrate how fractions work by splitting whole objects into parts. The comical cats of the wildly popular Words Are CATegorical series divide everything from pieces of pizza to groups of people into halves, thirds, tenths, and more. Peppy rhymes, goofy illustrations, and kid-friendly examples take the fear out of fractions.

Booklist (10/01/2011):
Grades K-3 The latest Math Is CATegorical title presents fractions as a way to express parts of an entity (pizza) or a group (jugglers). The rhyming lines of text bounce along in a genial way, introducing a lesson using flat boxes of pizza that can be sliced into two, four, six, or eight pieces to represent fractional values and to show that one value can be expressed in different ways. After demonstrating the usefulness of fractions in recipes, Cleary introduces the terms numerator and denominator. The final double-page spread offers 10 pie charts illustrating commonly used fractions and expressing each one verbally (one-third, seven-eighths) as well as numerically (1/3, 7/8). Brightened with eye-catching color combinations, Gable's cartoon-style illustrations express the simple mathematical ideas clearly, while his wacky critters add a good deal of humor. An upbeat introduction to fractions.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)
