National Occupational Classification 2006

9780660197098

The National Occupational Classification 2006 (NOC) provides a standardized language for describing the work performed by Canadians in the labour market. It is used for many applications including defining and collecting statistics, managing information databases, analyzing labour market trends and extracting practical career planning information. More importantly, it gives statisticians, labour market analysts, career counsellors, employers and individual job seekers a consistent way to collect data and describe and understand the nature of work.

The NOC is developed in collaboration with Statistics Canada according to 5 year Census cycles. It is based on extensive occupational research and consultation conducted across the country, reflecting the evolution of the Canadian labour market. By providing a standard way of organizing labour market information, the NOC helps all Canadians to be better informed about the world of work.

The NOC classifies occupations with a four-digit code according to skill type and skill level. The digits of the NOC code reflect important information about the occupation it represents (e.g., 3113 Dentists –“31” indicates that this is a health occupation and it requires university level education).

While the structure of the NOC 2006 is the same as the NOC 2001, users can expect to find:

* Review and updates performed to over 150 of the 520 Unit Group descriptions that include Lead Statement, Main Duties, Employment Requirements, Additional Information and Classified Elsewhere sections
* Modifications and/or new titles, including gender-specific titles added to the existing NOC Index of Titles
* Minor editorial changes made to a small number of Unit Group titles

The NOC 2006 includes a CD-ROM that contains the PDF version of the contents of the binder; a revised Index of Titles; and a poster-sized NOC Matrix that provides an overview of the entire classification. Unlike the 2001 edition, the CD-ROM of the NOC 2006 is not available to purchase separately.

All purchases of software are final.
